At University with a Disability

Alternative Routes in Life

I would suggest you have a thorough think about what you want your next step to be after your education. There are many options you could do besides university such as going abroad for a gap year, taking an apprenticeship and building yourself up or going straight into the world of work. Now I’m not necessarily an expert in advising you of the other alternatives over University as that path has always been clear to me, but I can try and advise you on the approach that would suit you the most.

First and foremost, admitting University isn’t for you is not a shameful decision despite what some people may say; everyone is different and everyone must live the life they think is best for themselves.  You may already have an idea of what you want to do next and that’s great, or you may not have an idea and that is okay as well. Since you have finished college or school, you may turn your focus on a part-time job that you currently have and want to continue it with the possibility of a full-time job. Then there are other options to focus on such as following your passions and enjoying different escapes such as going on your travels.

Choosing the world of work can be a challenge. If you want to start applying for jobs, I would suggest that you ensure your work CV is up to date with all your details, education and skills etc. Then I would save a copy before you begin to look for jobs, via websites such as LinkedIn and I would also ensure this is the most up-to-date. Once you find a job you’re interested in, I would make a new copy of your CV and tailor it for the job as best as you can showing your personality in it. The job may not be your dream job but at least it’s something while you build yourself up to go into what you want to do.

Next, I would make sure your social media is updated and I would see what is public on your social media pages as employees might view your social media prior to speaking to you or offering you an interview. Sometimes it is the best way to get a bit of background on someone before you are seen in a face-to-face interview. The last thing you want is to have a bad social media presence. On the other hand, social media can be your greatest asset to make sure you have a good social media presence and it is up to date with what you would like potential employers to see.

If neither the work world nor University is what you want to do next, there is the opportunity also just to have a break, rest and relax. There is time to travel now, and that is something I wish I could have done.
