Lightyear is a film about the legendary space ranger, Buzz Lightyear, based on the original film franchise of Toy Story. In this film, Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans) embarks on a journey to return home and encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg, (voiced by James Brolin) attempting to steal his fuel source. But with the help of ambitious recruits such as Izzy (voiced by Keke Palmer) and his robot companion, Sox (voiced by Peter Sohn), the team learn how to work together in this intergalactic adventure.
I was intrigued to see a film surrounding Buzz Lightyear, as Woody from Toy Story had a backstory featured in the second film, but Buzz had not, until now. Buzz was a significant character in the Toy Story films and I was interested to see a film with Buzz at the forefront, I must say I was disappointed. First, they did not use the voice of Tim Allen as Buzz, I think this would have added authenticity to the film and would add to Lightyear’s character. It did have its comedic moments and touched on some aspects of the story of Buzz, but it was a pale imitation of the story and they could have done it better. The animation should have stuck to the Toy Story collection’s original style, but Buzz looked like Mr Incredible instead. To those fans of Toy Story, I would see the film for the sake of adding it to the Toy Story collection, but I wouldn’t have high hopes.
