Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) Film Review

Rating: 0.5 out of 5.

This new release stars Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz and Tika Sumpter. The story is the same cookie-cutter plot from our childhood gaming adventures, with a dull sense of humour and goofy animations. With such a great cast, especially Carrey who is a great comic, I was expecting a fun and exciting film. However, the film was boring and lacked depth in its characters and screenplay. Nostalgia was not enough to save the poor rendition of Sonic and his quest to stop Dr Eggman from scientific tyranny. I do not see the film as appealing to a wide variety of audiences, even to adults who grew up playing the Sega Mega drive Sonic games.

Nevertheless, the quality of the CGI and animation was excellent, capturing the high energy spirit of Sonic and his friends. Yet, this positive does not substantiate the film’s narrative or attention-grabbing factor.
