Following my taste of fame at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 film premiere which took place in London 2011, I wanted more and looked for more premieres to attend.
In 2014 I had become a big fan of the Hunger Games series and wondered if I’d be able to go to the Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 premiere. The date for the London premiere was getting closer and closer with no news whatsoever, but then I miraculously was able to get tickets and went with my dad.
Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 premiere took place in a rainy Leicester Square with security everywhere, it was madness but I loved every second. The wheelchair space was on the red carpet and the Odeon cinema was directly opposite it with a big monitor on the side of it which broadcast interviews with the cast throughout the night, it was the perfect spot.
There were many committed fans there at the premiere, some had been in Leicester Square since early hours that morning and many had camped out for days to be there at the premiere.
Fans were very excited to see cast and crew arrive, we were able to watch clips from Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 on the screen on Odeon cinema and then, of course, playing the Mockingjay theme tune on either side of them. Hugging the barrier as close as possible, we saw cast and crew start to arrive.
On arrival, cast and crew each posed for many photos taken by various members of the press, while their names and then their role was announced with a character profile played on the monitors around the square. When this was finished, they slowly moved around the square and signed autographs for many people in crowds. Everyone including me pushed and reached to be able to get autographs from every member of the cast we could. Cast and crew alike had a lot of patience, signing all of the items in reach as well as taking photographs and selfies with them and waiting for more to come forward before moving on. I really did admire the cast and crew’s commitment and everlasting energy, considering they had done all of this before in many other cities but they did not seem annoyed or tired with the repetitiveness of it all, they really were enthusiastic.
During the night, the cast and crew signed autographs for fans and took photographs with them, but there were also commenters doing interviews with members of the cast and crew on the main stage on the Odeon cinema. The interviews were live on the screen for the whole of Leicester Square to watch as they were asked their opinions on the premiere and how they were feeling current about everything related to the Hunger Games series. These interviews were great to watch, especially while we were waiting for cast and crew to come over and get photographs and autographs, it was good to get an insight into the Hunger Games world from their perspective and it was tear-jerking to hear how much they loved it and that they were sad to end, especially parting with us as fans.
Arrivals on the red carpet included Director, Francis Lawrence and Producer, Nina Jacobson, Gwendoline Christie who played Commander Lyme of District 2, Stanley Tucci who played Caesar Flickerman, Julianne Moore who plays Present Coin, Natalie Dormer who played Cressida, Donald Sutherland who played President Snow, Sam Claflin who played Finnick Odair, Elizabeth Banks who plays Effie Trinket, Woody Harrelson who plays Haymitch Abernathy and Liam Hemsworth who plays Gale Hawthorne. I was able to get autographs from every single one of them and I felt truly honoured when I got Donald Sutherland’s (President Snow) autograph and photograph from as he was and is a film icon and has been for years and his role in the Hunger Games series was brilliant.
Screams and shouts increased and lowered in volume depending on who had arrived and their love for them, screams were particularly loud with excitement when Sam Claflin that played Finnick Odair, and Liam Hemsworth who played Gale Hawthorne appeared. However, nothing compared to the volume of the screams and shouts of excitement when Josh Hutcherson who played Peeta Mellark were announced to be heading our way and then again when he arrived. The adrenaline during the premiere was incredible but nothing amounted to the reaction that Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) received when she arrived on the red carpet in Leicester Square, there was a huge collective screen to announce her presence!
I felt beyond excited when I saw Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson arrived on the red carpet, they are incredible, they portray their roles perfectly and I love their on-screen chemistry and they really do fulfil the roles perfectly, I can’t imagine anyone else in these roles, it’s been true magic. I watch the films and read the books again and again and I really think Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has become a role model for young girls because of the values she stands for in the series. Receiving autographs and taking photographs with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson was defiantly the highlight of my night and I was truly star struck.
As the night drew to a close, fans screamed and cheered, wanting more and the fans were rewarded by cast and crew coming over to sign final autographs and take photographs with us all, I was desperate for Josh Hutcherson’s autograph and photo and I got it. The premiere had one big grand finale, fireworks of different shapes and sizes were released into the night sky of Leicester Square, filling it with colour, it was spectacular!
