Ocean’s 8 (2018) Film Review

Serious girl power and strong direction but the story falls short

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) forms a team of a top-notch group to help her pull off the crime of the century. Ocean’s team includes comprises Ocean’s partner (Cate Blanchett), a has-been, tax-evading fashion designer (Helena Bonham Carter), a diamond expert (Mindy Kaling), stoner-hacker “Nine Ball” (Rihanna), a pickpocketing, motormouthed teenager (comedian Awkwafina) and Sarah Paulson’s bored stay-at-home mum. The team plan their heist at the Met Gala stealing a Cartier necklace from the unsuspecting neck of Bambi-eyed actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) and frame Debbie’s art dealer ex-boyfriend.

As might be expected of an Oceans film, things move smoothly such as the way the heist is planned, and slick direction is able to show each individual character’s backstory, however, the heist falls flat, and the story soon follows.
