Book Club (2018) Film Review

Star Rating: ⭐⭐

Four women in their golden years hope to recover their mojo by reading Fifty Shades of Grey and its squeals.

Diane (Keaton), Vivian (Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen) and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) are lifelong friends who meet every month to discuss books and drink wine. One month, a member suggests the book, Fifty Shades of Grey and the women collectively read the books and along the way hope get their mojos back.

The story follows each of the girls and their own lives and responses to the books and it does not rely too much on the plots of the books, rather each of the women’s’ response it. I enjoy how this film acknowledges older women as sexual beings and has more focus on them rather than their children which is often the preferred choice. However, the story does have a heavy emphasis on the use of innuendos.

There is a collection of formidable acting talent within this film and I think the overall rom-com film is great with a great message. ‘You’re never too old’.
