My Life

Who am I?

Hi, my name is Sophie Abel and I am 22 years – old. I am currently in my third year of study at De Montfort University, studying Creative Writing & Journalism. I am a bubbly friendly person who can’t resist a challenge.

I write regularly for my university’s magazine, ‘The Demon’ getting published in print but also online. I am also the producer of the Demon Chart Show on Demon FM, a student-based radio station at De Montfort University. This radio station broadcast on the De Montfort University campus and also around Leicester. The station can also be listened to via an online platform which can be accessed by anyone.

I am an avid reader whose favourite books include JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer, The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins, The Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth and Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken as well as many more.

As well as being an avid reader, I am also a passionate writer. I am currently writing my own fantasy novel as well as other pieces of fiction. I also have an active blog with a strong following!

I have Cerebral Palsy which affects all four of my limbs, particularly on the left side of my body. Although I am a full-time wheelchair user, I am constantly active and try and see the best in every situation and overcome the obstacles that are put in my way…

I am a media ambassador for Birmingham PHAB Camps, a local charity that enables disabled and non-disabled children and young adults participate in residential holidays and take part in a range of activities that embrace every ability. I assist the charity helping them raise vital funds as well as writing articles on their behalf showcasing the incredible work they do on a daily basis.

I aim to raise awareness, slowly changing people’s perspectives about those with disabilities and to enable them to have the same opportunities that anyone else would have in their lives. I want to make sure that “we’ as the disabled committee are represented fairly and accurately in the wider community and make sure our voices are heard and considered.

My biggest dream is to become a fantasy-fiction novelist and write my own published work. I am also considering a career in radio presenting or as a freelance journalist in print or online.
